Welcome to Richmondshire Youth Theatre (ryt).  We run theatre workshops for children and young people aged between 6 and 18 in Richmond, North Yorkshire.  Our structured but informal approach provides fun, underpins confidence and creates lasting friendships.  Our workshops provide theatre skills and performance opportunities. Youth theatre members showcase their skills via touring live public performances.

Ryt was established by professional drama tutors Sue Hedges and Tracey Lacey who have worked in the sector for many years.  They met at the Georgian Theatre Royal where Sue was the senior drama tutor and Tracey was a tutor.  They left the Georgian Theatre Royal in 2016 to set up ryt. Since then ryt has toured productions (many written and directed by ryt’s young people) to lots of different venues across Richmondshire including Richmond Town Hall, Leyburn Town Hall and the Dales Countryside Museum. Many of their past pupils have gone on to study acting and theatre practice  at top drama schools, and universities, leading to successful careers.

In 2020 Tracey moved away from Richmondshire and ryt welcomed Saul Johnson as a volunteer Drama Tutor. Saul has been a member of youth theatre since he was 8 years old, becoming a mentor age 13. Saul studied performing arts at Richmond School and Sixth Form. He has perfomed and worked backstage for many productions and was a director of the 2019 christmas community prodution ‘Peace in the Trenches’.

Our aim is to provide, relevant, empowering and accessible Youth Theatre for young people across Richmondshire.

Our Mission is to provide Youth Theatre that starts from where the young person is, enabling them via workshops, script work, theatre games, storytelling and public performance, to come to a realisation that they are valuable and can make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider world.
Richmondshire Youth Theatre is a member of the National Association of Youth Theatres   and we endorse their Drama, Theatre & Young People Manifesto.
