Welcome to Richmondshire Youth Theatre (ryt). We run theatre workshops for children and young people aged between 6 and 18 in Richmond, North Yorkshire.
Richmondshire Youth Theatres structured but informal approach provides fun, underpins confidence and creates lasting friendships. Our workshops provide theatre skills and performance opportunities. Youth theatre members showcase their skills via touring live public performances.
Our professional drama tutor Sue Hedges and volunteer drama tutor Tracey Lacey, have worked in the sector for many years. Many of their past pupils have gone on to study acting and theatre at universities and top drama schools, leading to successful careers. Sue and Tracey met at Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal over 14 years ago where Sue was a Youth Theatre Tutor and later the Senior Youth Theatre Tutor. Tracey, who had been a Youth Theatre volunteer, became a Youth Theatre Tutor in 2011. Sue and Tracey left the Georgian Theatre Royal in July 2016 to set up the Richmondshire Youth Theatre. Since then ryt have toured productions (many written and directed by our own young people) to different venues across Richmondshire including Richmond Town Hall, Leyburn Town Hall and the Dales Countryside Museum (see image below).
Our aim is to provide, relevant, empowering and accessible Youth Theatre for young people across Richmondshire.
Our Mission is to provide Youth Theatre that starts from where the young person is, enabling them via workshops, script work, theatre games, storytelling and public performance, to come to a realisation that they are valuable and can make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider world.
Richmondshire Youth Theatre is a member of the National Association of Youth Theatres and endorses NAYT’s I Love Youth Theatre Campaign which celebrates the positive impact of youth theatre on young people. We also endorse the Drama, Theatre & Young People Manifesto.
